Kyiv Polytechnic Institute was founded in 1898. It consisted of 4 departments: mechanical, agricultural, engineering and chemical. The first rector of the institute was a renowned scientist V.L. Kyrpychov, and the first Head of the State Examination Commission in 1903 was D.I.Mendelyeyev. Founders of KPI embodied the best traditions of famous European higher technical schools: Paris’ Ecole Polytechnic, Aachen, Vienna, Technical University of Magdeburg. The basis of the system of higher technical education was a combination of deep natural sciences, basic training in physics, mathematics, chemistry and other disciplines and general engineering, obtaining professional and practical skills in production and scientific institutions. KPI has been carrying these principles throughout history.

Among graduates of KPI there are world-famous designer of airplanes and helicopters Sikorsky, creator of turbojet engines Arkhip Lulka, designers of space rocket and aviation technology specialist Sergei Korolyov and Vladimir Chelomei, metallurgist I. Bardeen, designer of plane engines Olexandr Mikulin.

On the basis of KPI there were founded 12 universities in many regions of Ukraine, 9 of which have national status today: Kyiv National University of Construction and Architecture, Kyiv National University of Technology and Design, National Aviation University, National University of Life and Environmental Sciences of Ukraine, National University of Food Technologies, Odessa National Maritime Academy, Vinnytsia National Technical University, Zhytomyr, Cherkasy, Chernihiv State Technological University, Dnipropetrovsk National University of Railway Transport named after V.Lazaryan, Kharkiv National Automobile and Highway University.

Today KPI is the largest technical university of Ukraine among universities of research type, one of the leading universities in Europe and world. About 30,000 students study here, including foreign students. The University consists of 30 teaching and research departments (9 institutes and 19 faculties), 8 scientific research centers, 12 research institutes, 14 research centers and 1 design bureau.

University is one of the initiators and is directly involved in the reform of higher education, the introduction of new educational system, credit-modular technology of the educational process, the creation of applications to the European standard and other issues connected within Bologna process.

On the basis of KPI there was created Ukrainian Institute for Information Technologies in Education, Central and Eastern European Virtual University, which expanded the possibilities for citizens of many countries to obtain high-quality higher education without leaving their place of residence.

In order to help Ukraine to enter the single European educational space, KPI has become the center of the State Information Network of universities and institutes of the National Academy of Sciences URAN, which is the basis for accession to the European educational network GEANT. “KPI” is the initiator of the establishment in Ukraine of Center for HPC and data, which provides infrastructure for comprehensive information and education science, design elements of artificial intelligence and interactive technologies.

KPI actively participates in international educational, scientific projects and programs, successfully cooperates with 47 countries, has 32 joint structures with universities partners, leading international companies (EC, CU, UNDP, UNESCO, UNIDO, WIPO, NATO, EDNES, ICSU, CODATA) and well-known companies (MOTOROLA, SIEMENS, FESTO, SAMSUNG, INTEL, etc..).

Bein one of the first universities in Ukraine in September, 2003 KPI joined the Commonwealth universities who signed the “Magna Charta of Universities’ Europe (“Magna Charta Universitatum”).

Developments KPI annually celebrated State Prize of Ukraine in Science and Technology.

In April, 2007 the Board of Education of Ukraine decided to provide KPI with status of research university, the Charter is approved by the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine of 21.11.2007, № 1332. Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine of 03.02.2010 № 76 KPI was given the status of self-governing (autonomous) research national university.
